Another shadowed figure shuffled down the hall. Was it the person who had taken down Malock? But why? Had Benson crossed someone within the corporation?

Will guided Brook away from the bars. No way did he want her to experience an ounce of pain. Her father had already put her through enough.

She struggled, pulling from his grasp, the cloth no longer covering her face. “Melina?”

Brook had to be hallucinating, affected by the same drug that had knocked Malock out.

Then the figure stopped in front of their cell. Not Melina, but a man who held her in his arms. The man he never wanted to see again.

“Harris. What do you want?” He clenched his fists. How could his lover have betrayed them all?

Tim glanced away, refusing to meet his glare. “I…I came to get you out, send you back underground.”

“So we can walk into an ambush?” Yeah, right. “Why don’t you just shoot us now? It will be faster.”

“No.” Tim shrank back. “You don’t understand.”

Brook reached through the bars. “Melina.”

Melina gasped, struggling in Tim’s arms. “Let me go.”

Without hesitation, he set her down, taking another step back. “I never meant to hurt the innocent. I will pay for my sins, but the three of you need to get out, before it’s too late.”

Brook held her lover through the bars, stroking her pale face. “If we stay, things are only going to get worse. Let’s go while we have the chance.”

Will swallowed his anger and hurt. Getting Brook and Melina to safety remained his only priority. If he had the chance, he had to take it, regardless of how much he yearned for revenge. “And what are you going to do?”

Regardless of what he’d shared with Tim in the past, he had to ensure the man atoned for his sins.

Ripping his shirt open, his former lover revealed a black armored vest packed full of explosives. “I’m going to blow up Planet Core, take them out once and for all. I have timed charges placed all over the building, and I’m heading for the generator.”

“But why? Malock is the president, the orchestrator of all of this. Once he’s out of the picture, everything will be fine.”

“No, see, there you go again, blaming everything on Malock.”

The unconscious man on the ground moaned at the mention of his name. Tim quieted him with a kick to the gut.

“He is just a crazed puppet for the corporation, doing all their dirty work. The deception goes so much deeper. Taking him out will do nothing. Those holding all of the power will just insert another fool as president, maintaining their agenda.”

Gripping the bars, Will pulled himself closer to the man who’d broken his heart. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why let all those innocent people die?”

He finally made eye contact. “I tried, Will. God knows, I tried. But you were so hell bent on taking down Malock, you refused to see the bigger picture.”

His stomach twisted. He’s right. How could I have been so narrow-minded? Responsibility for all those lives needlessly ended rested on his shoulders.
